Movie : Devi Ahilya Bai

For, after all, you do grow up, you do outgrow your ideals, which turn to dust and ashes, which are shattered into fragments; and if you have no other life, you just have to build one up out of these fragments. And all the time your soul is craving and longing for something else. And in vain does the dreamer rummage about in his old dreams, raking them over as though they were a heap of cinders, looking in these ashes for some spark, however tiny, to fan it into a flame so as to warm his chilled blood by it and revive in it all that he held so dear before, all that touched his heart, that made his blood course through his veins, that drew tears from his eyes, and that so splendidly deceived him!”
 -- Fyodor Dostoevsky

This is a movie that demonstrates that our Great Indian
history is made not just by kings but also by simple women wives & widows. It depicts an untold life story of an incredibly courageous woman who took up the responsibility of ruling the kingdom after the death of her husband & only son. She guided a fledgling country ably, rising far above the contemporary standards of administration and governance.she ruled it for 30 years overcoming the 18th-century disadvantage of Gender from her capital Maheshwar a.k.a Mahishmathi mentioned in the recent Bahubali movie.

The movie starts with a tour guide at Mahishmati Ghat on the Narmada river exploring the Maheshwar Fort & depicting the life story of Devi Ahilya bai. He says that All the ups & downs in her life gave her the wisdom of ages & made all people perceive her as " Devi," i.e., Goddess, and thus the movie begins.

Malhar Rao, the first Maratha governor of malwa who later on became the first prince from the Holkar family, which ruled Indore, the present-day largest city in Madhya Pradesh, was returning to Indore after reporting to the king. On his way, he accidentally meets 8-year-old Ahilya from the Dhangar community (Shepard family, a nomadic tribe now agitating for ST status) and was astonished by her intelligence and her ability to read & write at times when girls were never allowed to study. He then decided to make her get married to his only Son, Khande Rao(Khandya), who was 12 years old. He also supported her to get all the needed education on par with her husband & other kids in the palace.

Unfortunately, her husband grew up to be an Aggressive, Arrogant, inefficient, irresponsible, womanizing Alcoholic man. So her Father-in-law Malhar used to give away the powers of managing Finance & State in his absence to Ahilya & not her son. This used to make him feel insulted, which further ruined her personal life. Her mother-in-law always stands on the side of her husband & used to hate Ahilya for hurting her son though she regretted it at her last days & handed Ahilya all the house responsibilities. Malhar Rao also had another son, an adopted one who was absolutely Honest & used to help Ahilya in managing things.

By the age of 20, Ahilya became a mother of two, Son Male Rao, and Daughter Muktha.and by 21, she became a widow when khanda died because of an accidental gunshot from surajmal's palace. When she was about to die on his funeral pyre because of the custom  "SATI," Her father in the law stood against it as a king. He begged her not to die as he is too old to rule & sati applies to them (Shepard caste) only after 6 generations of rule. Later malhar died out of depression after the battle of Panipat's debacle, and She alone had to take all the responsibilities of house & kingdom. She made her son get married to Maina & announced whoever solves the problems of empire can marry her daughter & thus, Mukta was married to Yashwantrao.

Fate was so cruel to her that her son grows up to be like her husband, and she always stood up on the side of maina protecting her from her son's aggressiveness, and later, he died out of insanity. She did everything she could to protect maina from SATI, but nobody supported her, and even Maina's parents were against Ahilya, which made her helpless & lose her son's family. Later, horribly, she lost even her only daughter Mukta to the custom of Sati. Yet this didn't stop her from spreading her empire of charities throughout India.

Nothing tests a hero like Crisis. She is an epitome of strength & womanhood. She, with all her Persistence & imperturbability, proved that Strength comes from an indomitable will & not just physical capacity
