Rational V/s Irrational

According to Arie Kruglanski's research, human behavior is not always rational or based on a careful consideration of costs and benefits. Instead, our actions may be 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐲 deep-seated 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 & 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬, 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐔𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐘. This means that people may make impulsive or irrational decisions when their underlying motivations are activated. This can lead to biased or distorted thinking, affecting how we perceive and interpret information.

For example, an individual struggling with alcohol addiction may be aware of the negative health effects and social consequences of excessive drinking. However, the urgent need for relief from emotional pain or the desire to escape reality may override these rational considerations, leading to continued alcohol consumption despite the negative outcomes.
