Suppression and repression are both psychological defence mechanisms used to deal with unacceptable or distressing thoughts, feelings, or desires.
👉Suppression involves consciously managing or controlling unwanted thoughts or feelings.
🙈 example :Archana tries to suppress her urge to eat junk food and drink coke, but often fails.
👉 Repression operates at an unconscious level, where distressing thoughts are pushed into the unconscious mind & hidden from conscious awareness.
Example: Someone might experience unexplained mood swings 👥or outbursts due to unresolved feelings from a past relationship💑.
- An individual exhibiting self-destructive behaviors may not understand the root cause, which could be associated with repressed feelings of guilt or shame related to a past mistake they made. 😓😓
🕷 Another good example is that someone trying to repress their childhood fear of spiders might overreact 🕷 whenever they encounter a harmless spider. However, by confronting and overcoming they fear, they become a Spider-Man.🕸ⱒ 💪😇
