Marriage benefits for both emotional and physical health. Married people tend to report higher life satisfaction and lower psychological distress than single people, meaning those who never married, or are widowed or divorced. This must be qualified, however, by the quality of the marriage. Unhappily married people report greater emotional distress than single people. Thus, it appears that being married has benefits over being single unless one is unhappily married. Research is very clear that social support is a critical protective factor against emotional and physical stress.
Fowers (1991) research reported that men rated greater satisfaction with their marriages than did women.
Research suggests that marriages of people in their early twenties or younger are
more likely to fail than marriages between older partners. Further, overly hasty marriages, such as those that take place within six months after meeting, are less likely to
succeed. Additionally, insecure financial status, distant or acrimonious relationships
with the extended family, and the absence of positive marital examples in the extended
family are associated with poor marital outcomes. Negative ATTITUDE & BEHAVIOUR effects, of course, any human relation !!!
Aristophanes argues that “original” humans used to be beings with two faces and four arms and legs, but we were cut into two by Zeus due to our arrogance and disobedience of the Gods. Since then people go around the world seeking their missing half. Eros, the God of love, is here to assist us in finding this missing half, who is our spiritual kin. Aristophanes also claims there were three genders of the original human beings: male (two males), female (two females), and androgynous (male-female). Males were descended from the sun, females from the earth, and androgynes from the moon. Thus, Eros’ task is to make our race happy again through our completion and regression to the original state. However, making us complete again is not as easy task as we would expect. When Zeus cut people in half, they were at first cut in such a way that the halves could not sexually merge; they were able to just kiss and hug and were kept in this unsatisfied situation until they died. For this reason, Zeus gave them sexual organs. Sexual organs enabled the halves to merge in coitus and, at least for a little while, release the halves from their tension of desire for each other. Martha Nussbaum, however, has observed that this option pushes people to live within a domain of repetitive needs and desires which distract them from other businesses in life. It is very difficult to meet such halves, and an even bigger puzzle is how we would recognize them (what are the signs of meeting the right half?) (Nussbaum, 2001).

The girl‘s parents must take the following precautions at the time of their daughter‘s marriage to secure her future:
- The girl and her family members must refuse the marriage proposal from a groom or his family members if they make demands for dowry at the time of marriage negotiations.
- The parents are free to give gifts to their daughter at the time of marriage out of love and affection for her. The gifts given by relatives, friends and even by the husband or his relatives belong exclusively to the bride and constitute her stridhan. A list of these gifts received at the time of marriage must be made and the bride, the groom, and their parents must sign this document and it must be kept safely with the girl‘s family or a trusted friend so that there is no dispute regarding the gifts received as stridhan later.
- If after the marriage is arranged, valuables or cash is demanded as dowry or gifts, the marriage preparations must be stopped and a complaint under the Dowry Prohibition Act must be immediately be registered. (check regarding property rights of women for a further discussion on this issue.)
- Rather than cash gifts, relatives must be encouraged to give cheques in favor of the girl at the time of marriage and this should be deposited either in her own separate account or in a joint account in the name of the bride and the groom.
- All valuables and jewelry which belong to the bride must be kept in a locker which is in her exclusive name or which is in the joint names of herself and the groom, which she has the right to operate. 28 Complied by Majlis Legal center for IIT Kanpur
- If after marriage the girl is harassed for more dowry, she must communicate this to her parents through letters or emails. The parents of the girl may meet the groom and his family members to sort out the differences and if they cannot be resolved, the girl must be given a choice to return to her parents‘ home.
- In the event that the bride is thrown out of her matrimonial home, she must take with her all her jewelry and valuables.
- In case this is not possible, at the time of leaving or soon thereafter, she must lodge a complaint to the police mentioning the fact of harassment for dowry and also give the police a list of valuables that are left behind in the husband‘s home. The police can register a case under the Dowry Prohibition Act as well as under S.498A and S.406 of IPC and help the girl to immediately retrieve her belongings and valuables from the husband‘s residence. If at this stage no compromise is possible the girl can also initiate proceedings under the Domestic Violence Act for her civil rights such as maintenance, residence, the return of belongings, etc.
