The intention with any action is said to create an impression on the mind, which can be positive or negative. Unrighteous, negative actions pollute the mind and bring forth negative results. Conversely, righteous, positive actions purify the mind and also bring forth positive results. This is gist of the law of karma/law of attraction.
It is difficult to separate out "chitta shuddi" and "punya". The greatest punya is to have the mind purified, isn't it? As the mind changes due to our karma (actions), so does the external manifestation of life. It is the internal change that is most difficult. Once we change on the inside, the external change in our environment is much easier, as the external is the reflection of what lies within.
The karma kanda section of the vedas is no much like the teachings of the law of attraction. The goal is to create material abundance through action (Karma) and Upasana (Prayer/Devotion) and not self-realization, as prescribed in Vedanta, which is the Jnana Kanda. Since this is the case, the prescribed practices, if done with the right intention, will bring forth positive results for the person to enjoy for a specific time period. You may call this an increase in the "punya account" - By.Sudhir.Krishnan,
